75% seminar: Jörgen Dahlqvist – In Dialogue with Society
In Dialogue with Society. 75% seminar with PhD student Jörgen Dahlqvist.
Jörgen Dahlqvist’s doctoral project explores how different modes of representation in theatre can address the challenges to democracy. The purpose with the project is to develop different approaches to democratic dialogue with society as well as with and among audiences. The learning outcomes are drawn from four performances, Skapa Demokrati, Öva Demokrati, Monument and Ibsendekonstruktion II: Brand.
In the project the conceptualization, dramaturgy, staging and meaning making of these performances is discussed to present how the different performances were made, the artistic choices that shaped them, as well as how processes and different formats can offer different possibilities for creating a democratic arena through the theatre space. An existential, sociological, and cognitive understanding of narrative – where the blending of factual and fictional materials, the narration of a manifold of voices and audience participation has been in focus – have contributed to the engagement with society through theatre.
This have also revealed the potential of various dialogical models, such as conversation, perspective-taking, and invitation to self-reflection, in the different theatre formats within the project.
External opponent: Professor Joe Kelleher, University of Roehampton.
